They manufacturer many items for embroidery: quilt blocks, quilt crib tops, pillowcases, table cloths, queen size quilt tops, etc. One popular way that embroidery is used is in Crazy Quilting. It strikingly exhibits a person's efficiency and imagination which can transform a simple log of wood into a marvelous object of art. I took up water colour painting but did not find it relaxing - this project is like painting on material. The company offers fine hand-woven wall hangings in in wide range styles and sizes, including Arts & Crafts designs. (These are finished tapestries, not needlework kits.) Custom-spun blankets are hand-dyed and -woven in Maine on a shuttle loom.

In cross stitch, the stitches are formed by making x's across the squares to make a pattern. I’m really pleased with how it resembles chunks of ice floating on the freezing Southern Ocean. Several modern needlework designers have incorporated elements of Hardanger cut work into their embroidery designs and samplers, often combining them with other needlework techniques, stitches, speciality threads and other embellishments to great effect. For clarity of discussion in this chapter I have used the terms ‘fine art’ and ‘textile art’ where necessary, to denote the placement of the participants practices and their background and training.
